Indivisible TX-7, our sister organization, hosted the second TX-7 Candidate Forum on July 20th at Yes Prep Gulfton. With over 250 people in attendance, including the bright-eyed staff members of our candidates, the house was packed with people eager to hear what each of the seven candidates had to say. Our primary goal with these forums is to create a space where community members can interact with the candidates in an equitable manner (watch the Facebook live stream here). We also hope each of the candidates gain valuable experience in taking questions from future constituents and become better prepared for the harsher realities of the upcoming 2018 general election. Read on for a few opinions shared by our Swing TX-7 Left members about the event.
I left last week’s forum better informed about the seven candidates. I wasn’t crazy about the format, though, which had members of the audience addressing their questions to specific candidates. I would have preferred to hear each candidate answer the same question, to compare responses, but I’m sure we’ll have opportunities for that. It’s still early to decide which candidate will be the most effective against Culberson, but I left having narrowed the field somewhat—my mission accomplished.
As I sat listening (and taking copious notes) to seven Democratic candidates all vying to represent the people in Congressional District 7, I was heartened and hopeful, seemingly a rare feeling these days for many of us. I heard seven people dedicated to serving with honesty and integrity. I heard seven people vow to listen to and be with the people of this district. I heard seven people ready to stand up for this district in the machine that is Washington, D.C. I, for one, am excited about our choices!
Join us for the next event, the People's Town Hall of TX-7, where we will be inviting Representative John Culberson to attend and take questions from the audience. The event will focus on addressing specific policy concerns from members of the community. We invite you to come ask your questions and hear from some local policy experts. Check back for more details including date, time, and location.
